Admission Requirements:

  • No GRE required
  • No teaching certificate required

In order to be eligible to receive an MAEd in Building Principal – K-12 program degree from Avila University, you must have the following:

  • Bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited institution
  • GPA requirements for unconditional admission: 3.00 cumulative grade point average at the completion of the undergraduate degree
  • GPA requirements for provisional admission: 2.75 cumulative grade point average at the completion of the undergraduate degree
    • Students admitted provisionally must achieve a 3.0 GPA on the first nine (9) credits in their program of study
  • Official transcripts from all institutions previously attended (Avila graduates do not need to obtain Avila transcripts.)

In order to complete your educational leadership online program, you will complete 11 courses for a total of 30 credit hours.

Students will take EDL 695 twice.  There are 300 total field hours in the program.

This course will equip students to create and implement a cycle of continuous improvement by collecting and analyzing student data as an individual and team leader to plan instruction. Topics will include: data team structures, assessment development, MTSS, and differentiated instruction based on data. Must be taken at Avila.

This course instructs participants on how to facilitate the development and implementation of a shared vision of learning and growth for all students. Program participants will learn how to shape a collective vision using multiple measures of data and focusing on equitable access, opportunities, and outcomes for all students. Participants will learn how to engage others in collaborative processes to develop a shared vision of teaching and learning and will then learn how to guide and monitor decisions and outcomes using that shared vision.

This course examines effective instructional approaches and school programs. The course will explore and discuss significant research and best practices in instructional leadership, learning theory, school climate and culture, effective teaching methods, professional development, and the relationship between instruction, curriculum, and assessment. The course also explores critical issues specific to curriculum, innovative instructional methods, and the principal’s role as the school’s instructional leader. Additionally, the course focuses on developing educators as leaders in assessment, research, and evaluation. Applicable laws, policies, and regulations will be emphasized.

This course provides a survey of the principal aspects of school-community relations for aspiring school leaders. Topics covered include an overview of the importance of school community communications, the role of the leader, communications with families, partnerships with the community, crisis communications, and evaluation of school-community relations programs. This course will provide tools and resources for building a positive relationship with staff, parents, and the community.

This course will focus on legal issues that arise in elementary and secondary schools. The course introduces participants to legal reasoning and analysis and examines various contemporary legal concerns in school contexts. Some of the goals of the course include: interpreting the federal, state, and local level judicial and legislative systems and the formation of laws relating to public education, and analyzing current school practices from the standpoint of potential legal controversies.

Provides students with a comprehensive overview of organization and management theory, requirements, and challenges which will form the framework for sound organizational and management practices for administration. Accomplishing this will demand extensive research in educational administration literature and interviews and contacts with practicing K-12 school leaders.

This course seeks to apply the conceptual framework, strategies, and benefits of restorative approaches to leaders seeking to develop a social/emotional school-wide plan inclusive of this philosophical thinking. This course is designed to help participants develop a historical and theoretical understanding of restorative approaches and build restorative-based skills that can be used in various settings and situations. Ethical dilemmas, cultural competence, and decision-making in restorative approaches, and their impact, will be discussed.

Innovative leadership is a style of leadership that involves applying innovation and creativity to managing a school community. Innovative leaders often inspire new ways of teaching and learning in approaches that have typically not been used. The ability to apply innovation is crucial in times of uncertainty, ambiguity, and risk, so schools often encounter situations that can benefit from bringing on innovative and creative leaders. As students learn to become innovative leaders in this course, they will learn, think, lead, and model to support agile, effective, and resilient learning experiences for staff and students. This will then have a domino effect, thus creating a culture of sustained innovation in their schools.

This practicum is designed to help the student prepare for a role in K-12 leadership. The student is matched with an experienced building-level leader who will mentor and provide appropriate experiences. This preparation is achieved by providing the student with a broad set of hands-on experiences that allow the student to utilize the knowledge and skills in the coursework and think critically about the role. The course focuses on applying learned theory and experiences in relation to professional standards. 50 hours of major field work. Orientation required. This course is a 16-week course that may be broken out into 2 8-week sessions indicated by Part A and B. If a student fails any one part of the course, both parts must be retaken.
Duration: 8 Weeks weeks
Credit Hours: 1
This course is a continuation of the practicum experience designed to help the student prepare for a role in K-12 leadership. The student is matched with an experienced building-level leader who will mentor and provide appropriate experiences. This preparation is achieved by providing the student with a broad set of hands-on experiences that allow the student to utilize the knowledge and skills in the coursework and think critically about the role. The course focuses on applying learned theory and experiences in relation to professional standards. 50 hours of minor field work. Orientation required. This course is a 16-week course that may be broken out into 2 8-week sessions indicated by Part A and B. If a student fails any one part of the course, both parts must be retaken.
Duration: 8 Weeks weeks
Credit Hours: 2
The School Leadership Internship is designed to help the intern fully prepare to transition to a K-12 leadership role. The intern is matched with an experienced building-level leader who will mentor and provide appropriate experiences. This preparation is achieved by providing the intern with a broad set of hands-on experiences that allow the intern to utilize the knowledge and skills in the course work and think critically about the role. The course focuses on applying learned theory and experiences in relation to professional standards. Course may be repeated up to 4 credit hours towards the degree. 100 hours of major or minor fieldwork. This course is a 16-week course that may be broken out into 2 8-week sessions indicated by Part A and B. If a student fails any one part of the course, both parts must be retaken.
