In order to be eligible to receive an MAEd C&I – Teacher Leader from Avila University, you must have the following:

  • Bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited institution
  • GPA requirements for unconditional admission: 3.00 cumulative grade point average at the completion of the undergraduate degree
  • GPA requirements for provisional admission: 2.75 cumulative grade point average at the completion of the undergraduate degree
    • Students admitted provisionally must achieve a 3.0 GPA on the first nine (9) credits in their program of study
  • Official transcripts from all institutions previously attended (Avila graduates do not need to obtain Avila transcripts.)

In order to earn your Teacher Leader MAEd in Curriculum & Instruction online, you will complete 30 credit hours, including 21 credit hours of core courses and nine credit hours of concentration courses.

This course will equip students to create and implement a cycle of continuous improvement by collecting and analyzing student data as an individual and team leader to plan instruction. Topics will include: data team structures, assessment development, MTSS, and differentiated instruction based on data. Must be taken at Avila.

Advanced Curriculum explores the basic concepts, terminology, theories, philosophy and present research related to curriculum planning. Application of these components is realized through the writing of a curriculum unit. Must be taken at Avila University. FA,

This course is designed to help teachers create and maintain caring, respectful classroom communities in which learners feel safe, valued, cared about, respected, and empowered. The course includes an emphasis on developing knowledge about the culture and backgrounds of children and families in order to establish positive interactions within the classroom community

This course provides students with those essential competencies necessary in order to understand and evaluate the research of others, and to plan their own research with minimal assistance. The basics of both qualitative and quantitative research are covered in this course. The primary goal of this educational research course is to provide a learning environment that supports the graduate student in engaging in the analysis and design of research at a scholarly level and in becoming a critical consumer of research as an informed practitioner.

The focus of this course is teacher self-study and reflection on the teacher’s own knowledge, experience, and curiosities for further learning. As such, this course is focused on the candidate as a teacher-learner and the day-to-day practice of the teacher leader. The course outcome is a proposal and plan for a practitioner inquiry. Prerequisite: ED 689: Educational Research

This course will examine trauma-sensitive educational practices that foster resilience in students and teachers and that support student, family and teacher relationships. What it means to create a resilience-enhanced classroom and/or school to support students’ growth and teachers’ wellbeing will be explored. The concept of secondary trauma and compassion fatigue in teachers and the ways in which stress can impact adult emotional regulation skills and well-being will be addressed.

This course will examine the variety of ways that technology can impact the classroom environment. Participants will analyze current trends in technology and learn how to assess these trends on their effectiveness on learning for each student. Various topics include digital citizenship, communication, collaboration, creativity, critical thinking, and classroom management with technology.

This class will challenge educators to understand how to create, deliver, and assess Project Based Learning (PBL) experience to students. Students will understand the components of how to integrate grade level learning objectives into a PBL activity. Students will create a PBL research-based lesson plan along with formative and summative assessments that could be used in their current classroom setting. Students will experience and become aware of the various safe technologies available to engage learners with communication, collaboration, creativity, and critical thinking throughout a PBL activity.

This course will focus on the knowledge, skills, and dispositions needed to become a Teacher Leader. Topics will include: team dynamics, change management, formal and informal leadership, professional learning communities, and other relevant subjects needed to become an effective teacher leader. Must be taken at Avila.

The Universal Design for Learning approach to curriculum design for students with disabilities and/or diverse needs as well as evidence- and research-based approaches that provide access to the general education curriculum in mainstream school settings will be addressed in this course. The role of teachers, special educators, paraprofessionals and the school leadership team in promoting inclusive general education classrooms will also be highlighted.
